Sport / Isles pair power their way onto the podium at national events

Cameron Nisbet and Tegan Patterson were on the podium at two strongman competitions over the weekend.

SHETLANDERS Tegan Patterson and Cameron Nisbet enjoyed great success at strongman and strongwoman competitions over the weekend.

The pair travelled down with Patterson competing in the women’s under-73kg weight class in the Natural Strongman 4 Nations competition, and Nisbet taking part in the men’s under-72kg category at the Natural Strongman UK and Ireland championships.

Nisbet had qualified for the competition by winning the Scottish Natural Strongman under-72kg competition in January.

Both competitions this weekend consisted of the same five events, with Nisbet’s competition having an additional sixth event.

Tegan Patterson (right) was second at the Four Nations competition.

The first test the athletes faced was a squat for repetitions in 60 seconds, with Patterson managing seven reps of the 110kg weight for a second place finish.

Meanwhile Nisbet performed six reps with a 170kg squat to take a fourth place finish in the first event.

The next event was a sandbag carry for maximum distance within 60 seconds.

The 70kg sandbag was carried an impressive 127.5m by Patterson for an event win, and Nisbet managed a distance of 116.5m with a 100kg sandbag to also narrowly take an event win by just half a metre.

After the sandbag carry it was a log clean into overhead press for repetitions in 60 seconds.

Patterson used a 65kg log for three reps to take joint first on the third event. Nisbet put up a respectable six repetitions with a 75kg log to once again take a fourth place finish.

The fourth event of the competition was a series of rubber coated spherical atlas stones in 10kg increments, which needed to be taken from the ground and balanced on the shoulder with just one hand supporting.

Patterson had a run of 40kg to 80kg in which she managed up to the 60kg stone in 29.12s for second place, with a narrow miss on 70kg after running out of time.

Nisbet managed to regain his groove on this event, managing four stones in his run with 70kg to 100kg completed in 35.16 seconds.

He was one of only two to manage the 100kg stone and did so faster than the other competitor to once again take an event win.

The fifth event – and final event for Patterson – was a sandbag throwing medley in which five kettlebell shaped sandbags had to be thrown clear of a 4.1 metre high bar in the fastest time. Patterson completed four bags of 7-10kg in 39.92s time for a third place finish.

For Nisbet this was another dominant event, clearing all five bags from 10kg to 18kg in 19.79 seconds and becoming one of only two to complete all five.

The final event for Nisbet was a sandbag carry and load medley. Athletes had to run 15 metres to an 80kg sandbag, carry it back 15 metres to a four foot high bar and load it back and forth as many times as possible within 60 seconds.

This was the event Nisbet had been most confident about, and his confidence had been well placed as he managed 12 loads over the bar with the sandbag in the allotted time for a fourth event win of the competition.

Those performances were enough for Patterson to finish second in the Natural Strongman 4 Nations competition, and for Nisbet to win the UK and Ireland championships.

Both Patterson and Nisbet sent thanks and appreciation to all family, friends, and supporters as well as to Shetland Weight Training Club for their facilities and for sponsoring towards the costs of their travel.
