IT WAS another superb weekend for athlete Layla Todd, who was the third under-20 runner to cross the line at a race in Edinburgh over the weekend.
Todd and Katie Clubb – both of whom will represent Shetland at this summer’s Island Games – competed in the Sri Chinmoy 5K road race at Silverknowes on Friday night.
The pair were two of 530 athletes starting the race, with Todd across the line as 10th female and third in the under-20 category in a time of 16 minutes and 53 seconds.
Clubb was just two seconds off her PB in a time of 17:22, finishing 20th out of 158 females taking part.
Todd capped off a superb weekend by being announced as the co-captain of the Shetland junior inter-county athletics squad for next month’s junior county.
She had already been named as the overall captain for the blues, and will now lead the athletics squad out alongside Abbie Taylor.
Rhona Anderson and Finlay Geddes will captain the swimming team, with Jenny Jamieson leading the hockey squad.
The junior inter-county starts on Saturday 7 June, with Shetland hosting this year. It will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
SHETLAND’S women’s footballers continued their flawless start to the Highlands and Islands League Cup with a thumping victory over Clachnacuddin FC on Sunday.
The blues were joining the competition for the first time this year, but have seriously impressed with two huge victories from their two games.
Four goals from Freya Leslie helped them to beat Clachnacuddin 7-0, with Lisa Goudie, Emily-Jane Veitch and Kayla Shearer also on the scoresheet.
It follows their 5-0 win over Orkney in the first match, which will see them through to the semi-finals of the competition in September.
Sunday’s game was part of their preparations for July’s Island Games, which marks their return to the event after a 20 year absence.
