Weather / Shetland having one of its warmest springs on record so far
SHETLAND is so far having one of its warmest meteorological springs on record.
Shetland has been basking in prolonged sunshine over the last week or so, and the forecast suggests the spell of fine weather will continue over the coming days.
Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon told Shetland News that Shetland has, so far, had one of its warmest meteorological springs on record.
“There’s obviously still a few weeks to go before we know exactly where the season may fall in the archive,” he advised.
Meteorological spring runs from 1 March through to the end of May.
The warmest spring on record for Shetland was 2024, with an average mean temperature of 7.6C.
So far provisional figures place this year’s average mean spring temperature at 7.5C.
Dixon said “rainfall and sunshine amounts are actually currently around average for the season so far for Shetland, which is largely out of step with much of the rest of the UK, which has had a fairly dry and sunny season so far”.
“One of the reasons behind the relative warmth in the season so far for Shetland persistent areas of high pressure over the UK, helping temperatures to build by day to well above average,” he added.
