Sport / Football round-up 12 May

SPURS, Scalloway and Whalsay are into the second round of the Highland Amateur Cup after beating fellow isles’ opposition over the weekend.

Scalloway produced the surprise result of the opening round, beating Whitedale 3-1 after extra time at Strom on Saturday afternoon to progress.

Whalsay thrashed Championship side Banks 12-1 at home to ease through, while Spurs beat Ness United comfortably by five goals to one in town.

Iochdar Saints from South Uist lie in wait for Scalloway in round two, while Spurs will face Westside FC.

Portree are the opponents that Whalsay will play.

The second round ties will be played on Saturday 31 May, with all three Shetland teams drawn at home – though the games will likely be played on the mainland.

Spurs have made a flying start to the season after beating Lerwick Celtic in the opening game of the Ocean Kinetics Premier League on Monday.

Celtic won the 2024 league title without losing a game, but a depleted Celtic fell at the first hurdle as Spurs beat them 5-2.

Whalsay edged past Whitedale 1-0 at Strom through an Ethan Rathore goal, while Ness United beat Thistle 3-0.

In the DITT Reserve League Whitedale B’s two year streak without losing a league game was ended by Celtic B, with a double from Jordan Simpson enough to earn a 2-1 victory.

There were comfortable wins in the other three matches from Spurs B, Whalsay B and Scalloway B, with the milkbags beating Delting 5-2.

Whalsay saw off Ness in a nine-goal thriller, winning 6-3, and Scalloway B beat Thistle B 4-1.

In the Jewson Championship on Friday night Bressay Sharks moved to the top of the table after a 5-2 away win over newcomers Southside Impact.

Ness C and North Isles played out a 2-2 draw in the night’s other fixture, with Wastside Rebels v Banks postponed due the latter’s Highland Amateur Cup commitments.
