Transport / Bigga to return to service after cement mixer incident

A worker in a yellow vest examines a damaged car and machinery on a ferry. The car is partially crushed, and there are visible vehicle parts and cables.

THE BIGGA is set to return to service on the Bluemull Sound route this weekend.

Shetland Islands Council said the ferry, which was involved in an incident which saw a cement mixer topple over onboard yesterday (Thursday), would return to the route “when weather permits”.

However, the Geira will continue to run to a Saturday timetable today (Friday) – and will again stop running at 7.05pm.

The last run from Gutcher to Belmont tonight will be at 6.55pm, and the final run from Belmont to Hamarsness is at 7.05pm.

Tomorrow, the Geira will do a run from Hamarsness to Gutcher at 6.15am and then from 6.45am onwards will run to a normal Saturday timetable.

Shetland Islands Council said that bookings are available for Saturday, and that all existing bookings remain valid.

No-one was injured in the incident aboard the Bigga yesterday, though one person was treated for shock.

An internal investigation is now under way, and the incident will be reported to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).
