Council / Former Viking construction road at Sandwater to open to public

A NEW section of road at Sandwater linking the A970 to the B9075 road to Kergord will open to the public on Monday.

Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said there would be minor works to complete along the new road over the next weeks, with drivers advised to watch their speed and be aware of any traffic controlling measures.

The council said an existing section of the B9075 road at Sandwater will remain closed to traffic to allow the installation of power distribution cables, although access will be maintained for land management and livestock welfare purposes.

The road has only been able to be used by construction traffic during the building of the Viking Energy wind farm, and was opened to contractors in March 2021.

There was a commitment from Viking that the road would be tarred once wind farm construction was completed, before it was surfaced, lined and handed over to the SIC.

The new road runs parallel to the existing B9075 Sandwater road.
