SHETLAND Islands Council’s quality improvement manager Robin Calder has been named as the preferred candidate for the head teacher post at Anderson High School in Lerwick.

After recent interviews, and subject to pre-employment checks being met, he will take up the post in August when current head Valerie Nicolson retires after two decades at the helm.

Since 2018 Calder has been employed as executive manager for the council’s quality improvement team, based at Hayfield House.

He originally started work for Shetland Islands Council in 2001 as a history teacher at the Anderson before progressing up to pupil support teacher, and then head teacher in Whalsay in 2011.

Calder has been part of the quality improvement team since 2014.

Children’s services director Helen Budge said: “I am delighted that Robin Calder has been appointed to the post of head teacher at the Anderson High School.

“He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from his time in the school, as a head teacher of Whalsay School and his current role as the executive manager – quality improvement into this post.”
