Letters / Electric vehicles will soon be out of date
Why should Lerwick go green? I have never seen clouds of smog hanging over any part of this archipelago.
If the big smoke of Lerwick is made car free where are the car parks that people will use for the park and ride buses? Fewer cars in the centre of the town would mean more mobility scooters, the pavements aren’t wide enough.
How do I get to and from work when I’m working night shifts 34 miles from my home? Will crofters be banned from using quads or towing trailers with their fossil fuel burning vehicles. Why only Lerwick, why not all of Shetland?
The attraction of Shetland is that is not like the homogenised mainland UK. We have wind to blow away doom laden clouds.
EV cars will soon be out of date, hydrogen is the future. Even Aberdeen has hydrogen powered buses…

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.
Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.
Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has over 600 supporters who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.
Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -
- Bring you the headlines as they happen;
- Stay editorially independent;
- Give a voice to the community;
- Grow site traffic further;
- Research and publish more in-depth news, including more Shetland Lives features.
