Education / Cullivoe lands nomination in first Scottish school food awards
CULLIVOE Primary School in Yell has been shortlisted in the first Scottish School Food Awards.
The inaugural awards aim to “celebrate and improve standards of wellbeing, sustainability and school meals” across the country.
Cullivoe Primary School has been shortlisted in the ‘sustainable school of the year’ category alongside George Watson’s College in Edinburgh and St. Leonards School in St. Andrews.
The nomination recognises how Cullivoe uses the food produced in its garden and polytunnel for snacks and dinners. The school cook and the local community are all involved, helping pupils on the island to learn sustainability skills.
The national awards are open to independent and local authority institutions, as well as early learning centres, contract caterers and food suppliers.
The awards will be judged by 14 experts from across different sectors and the winners announced on the evening of Thursday 27 October at an event in Edinburgh.
Cullivoe headteacher Claire Lawson said: “We are all proud of our school and I am so delighted that the work of the pupils, parents and staff is being recognised in this way.
“As an eco school and a gold level rights respecting school, we continue to support our pupils to become responsible local and global citizens.”
