Letters / Trust committed to UNESCO Global Geopark status

In response to two letters from earlier today: A cringing embarrassment of a geopark and In defence of Shetland Amenity Trust

Our trustees are committed to the UNESCO Global Geopark status for Shetland and in ensuring a positive future for the designation and for Shetland itself.

Our focus in recent months has been to try and secure the funding required to both retain the UNESCO designation and to develop projects that will support and enhance the area.

We have had some success and we are in positive discussions with partners locally and nationally both with regard to short term funding and also in developing a longer-term approach to the geopark that means we are not reliant on the public purse in order to support it.

This funding will be crucial to the future of the geopark and to address the issues raised.

Sandy Middleton
Natural Heritage Manager
