Letters / Details are virtually non-existent

As the council appears interested in returning to its policy of “self-determination” over the coming term, I look forward to finding out what this might actually mean in practice.

Exploring self-determination remains on the agenda for new SIC convener

Local government in Scotland is indeed in a dire state and has long been denied the parity of esteem it deserves.  Further cuts outlined this week by the Scottish Government threaten to make the situation even worse for all councils in Scotland.

But the SIC’s response of exploring “self-determination” has been singularly vague.  Any details or even ambitions have been virtually non-existent since the policy was passed two years ago.

If only there had been some recent opportunity to discuss proposals with the Shetland public and gain a mandate for any constitutional changes the council might wish to explore.
