News / Two suffer burns in gas explosion at Hillswick house

AN ADULT and a child are recovering in hospital on the Scottish mainland after sustaining minor burns resulting from a gas explosion at a house in Hillswick on Sunday morning.

Fire teams from Bixter, Hillswick and Brae were called out to the incident at a property near the St Magnus Bay Hotel in the North Mainland village.

Myles Murray of the Shetland branch of the Scottish Fire Service told BBC Radio Shetland: “On arrival the crews were faced with three casualties – one suffering severe shock, one adult with burns and one child also with burns.

“Crews administered trauma care and first aid to the casualties in conjunction with the staff from the St Magnus Bay Hotel, who assisted with first aid which is greatly appreciated.

“The building was made safe by the first responding crew from Hillswick. They isolated the gas supply and also isolated the utilities – the electrical supply and the water supply to the building.”
