Letters / Young people reject separation

Douglas Young (Immediate impact; SN, 09/02/14), these are the kind of results you should take into account when considering how the referendum result will turn out, not how many people from all over the world happen to like your Yes Shetland Facebook thingy.

Young people from schools across Fife have overwhelmingly supported Scotland’s place in the UK at a debate today.

After hearing arguments from the Better Together and nationalist campaigns at a debate in St Bryce Kirk in Kirkcaldy, 67 per cent of pupils backed staying in the UK.

Support for staying in the UK increased after the young people had heard the arguments.

Over 300 pupils from 16 schools across Fife took part in the debate and heard from Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson MSP and Scottish Labour deputy leader Anas Sarwar MP from the pro-UK campaign, and Scottish Green leader Patrick Harvie MSP and SNP government minister Fiona Hyslop MSP from the nationalists.

This result follows similar votes in schools, colleges and universities across Scotland, where young people rejected separation and supported our place in the UK after debates and referendum projects.

Michaella Drummond, a Better Together youth rep from Fife, said:

”It’s great that so many young people support Scotland remaining in the UK. This latest result in Fife is just one of many where young people have rejected Alex Salmond’s plan for separation.

“It’s right that young people in Scotland have their say in the referendum debate. The decision we make will be decisive and we need to make sure it’s the right one. It’s not surprising that so many young people are backing Better Together and our place in the UK.

“Nationalism and separation make no sense to young people in Scotland. The referendum is the only part of my life where I am being asked to think smaller and that’s exactly the reason why young people are rejecting Alex Salmond’s separation plans.

“Being part of something bigger means more opportunities for young people in Scotland. We know that we are stronger and better together.”
