Letters / Immediate impact

When the Prime Minister made his plea to the people of Wales, Northern Ireland and England on Friday to influence their friends and family to vote for continued Westminster rule the effects were felt within 24 hours.

Support for www.facebook.com/YesScotland increased by over 400 from 126,639 befoe the speech to 127,071 after.

Our own www.facebook.com/YesShetland page jumped over two per cent to 1,052, whilst www.facebook.com/pages/Better-Together-Shetland/588825371130091 at 144, showed no increase at all.

Both Facebook and Twitter lit up after the desperate plea by Mr Cameron with messages from south of the border but they were of support for our quest to gain independence including requests to take Yorkshire, Northumberland etc with us!

Many of the messages can be seen at www.wingsoverscotland.com/ask-and-ye-shall-receive/

The politics of Scotland and Westminster are diverging daily but the people are uniting in a common cause.

Only one country has the power to change that.

Vote Yes on 18 September.

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.

Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.

Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has  over 600 supporters  who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.

Your contribution will ensure Shetland News can: -

  • Bring you the headlines as they happen;
  • Stay editorially independent;
  • Give a voice to the community;
  • Grow site traffic further;
  • Research and publish more in-depth news, including more Shetland Lives features.
