A LERWICK driver made a “monumental error” of judgment when he set off from home before his steamed up windows had cleared.
On Thursday Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that 58 year old Andrew McGuinness, of 70 Breiwick Road, could not see where he was going when he crashed into the monument at the town’s Market Cross on 29 September, causing significant damage.
McGuiness was fined £300 and got four penalty points after admitting driving carelessly when he set off in his works van with the window so steamed up that he couldn’t see properly.
Defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client made a “monumental error” by driving while he wasn’t able to see properly.
Sheriff Philip Mann said the case demonstrated how important it was to drive with clear vision.
“It could have been a pedestrian and could have had a devastating consequence,” he said.
