Letters / Now we know why

People who lived in the isles and were in the habit of going to the shore and collecting shellfish—generally mussels, whelks and razor shell (spoots) should remember that we children were told –“Never eat shellfish unless there is an “R” in the month.”

Why was this forgotten?

I never asked why or if I did I do not remember, but it is a rule I have lived by all my life.

Now we know the reason (Mussel farms hope to harvest again soon; SN 28/7/13).
