News / Sutherland likely to go back to jail

A SHETLAND man is likely to be sent back behind bars after he admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance, on 16 May, in Lerwick.

Ross Sutherland, of Port Arthur, Scalloway appeared before Lerwick Sheriff Court on Monday.

In December 2008, Sutherland was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison at Edinburgh High Court for causing the death of his friend Ian Sandison in a drunken car crash in Lerwick on 4 November 2007.

At the time Sutherland was also handed a five year driving ban.

As the 24 year old had been released early, sheriff Philip Mann handed consideration of the original case back to the High Court.

Sentence on the driving offences dealt with by Lerwick Sheriff Court was meanwhile adjourned until 11 July.

The case against his co-accused, 24 year old James Garson, who pled guilty to permitting Sutherland to commit the driving offices, was deferred to the same date.
