A YOUNG Shetland serial offender was sent to jail for four months after admitting he stole two bottles of spirits from the Lerwick Co-op supermarket on 25 April.

An arrest warrant was issued by Lerwick Sheriff Court after Adam Nelson, of 24 Sandside, Mossbank failed to show up in court on Wednesday morning.

When Nelson arrived 10 minutes after the warrant was issued, he was taken straight to the cells before appearing from custody later the same day.

The court heard that Nelson shoplifted the two bottles of vodka in the hope of selling them to pay his electricity bill.

Asking for leniency, defence solicitor Tommy Allan said his client was trying to turn his life around.

He said he was hoping to go on a rehab programme to rid him off his methadone addiction and was also about to start work with the Moving On Employment Project charity.

But Sheriff Philip Mann said the 24 year old’s “horrendous record” left him little choice but to send him to prison.
