News / BBC strike again

BBC Radio Shetland is off air on Thursday as staff join a UK-wide 12 hour strike in protest at plans for compulsory redundancies.

The National Union of Journalists and its sister media union Bectu staged a nationwide walk out at noon in response to BBC management refusing to agree to a six month moratorium on 20 per cent cuts across the corporation.

The unions claim the cuts have not only led to job losses, but have resulted in unacceptable workloads, stress and increased cases of bullying and harassment.

Last week NUJ members in Scotland called off an additional two days of strike action after management postponed the threat of compulsory redundancy facing three employees at the end of this month.
