News / Toilet camera puts man on sex register
A PEEPING tom who tried to film his female workmates on the toilet using a secret camera has been placed on the sex offenders register.
At Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 49 year old Robert Leask, of Huxter, Whalsay, admitted secreting a USB camera on 22 February in the communal toilet at Blueshell Mussels’ packing factory at Sparl, Brae.
The court heard the camera was found by a female worker who noticed a small black object wedged between the pipes next to the sink in the domestic style toilet.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said she showed it to her colleagues who identified it as some form of memory stick. The woman handed it to an office administrator who viewed its contents on her computer, where she saw footage of Leask adjusting its position to get the best view.
A senior manager was called in who contacted the police. When they interviewed Leask two days later he denied all knowledge of the device until he was told that he had been caught on camera himself.
Mr Mackenzie said: “The female employees involved were extremely upset by this, understandably because it is an extreme invasion of their privacy and indeed their trust amongst colleagues.”
Defence agent Tommy Allan said that his client had given him no explanation for his actions and therefore he could say nothing on his behalf.
Sheriff Graeme Napier told Leask to come back to court on 24 August to be sentenced after deferring the case for social work reports, and placed him on the sex offenders register.
