Court round-up 10 June 2026
A DRIVER who pulled out into the way of an oncoming vehicle has been given penalty points and fined.
Lillee May, from Brae, admitted driving without due care and attention at the Brig of Fitch junction on 10 December 2025.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard the 27-year old was waiting to pull out on to the A970 main road, and was waiting for a van to pass before she could do so.
However there was another car directly behind the van which May had not spotted, which she pulled out directly into the path of.
The complainer had to bring their vehicle to a complete standstill in order to avoid a collision, procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said.
Sheriff Eilidh MacDonald endorsed May’s licence with four penalty points and fined her £320.
A HOLIDAYING driver has been ordered to appear in court – or find himself on a “free holiday” to custody.
Vitalijs Melnikovs, 51, and Kevin Inkster, 56, had been told to appear at Lerwick Sheriff Court in person this week after pleading guilty by letter to the court a week previous.
However just Inkster stood in the dock on Wednesday, explaining that Melnikovs was away on holiday.
Melnikovs has admitted driving dangerously on 31 January this year between the Holmsgarth road in Lerwick and roundabout junction after suffering a medical seizure.
The charge states Melnikovs was banned from driving on 2 November 2023 because of his epilepsy, but drove at excessive speed, failed to give way and drove on to the pavement and into a sign and fence earlier this year after an epileptic incident.
Melnikovs, from Burra, is also charged with allowing Inkster to drive the car on 11 February 2026 while the vehicle posed a “danger to injury”, with collision damage to the front near side and multiple sharp edges.

Inkster, who is also from Burra, has admitted driving the vehicle in its dangerous state on 11 February.
Sheriff Eilidh MacDonald said that Melnikovs had been emailing the court with “lots of exclamation marks” to explain he was not in Lerwick and would not be attending.
She said he had asked for the case to be called in July instead.
Inkster explained that Melnikovs was away on holiday, to which the sheriff replied: “It’s nice that he’s on holiday but he needs to turn up here, otherwise he will be getting a free holiday elsewhere.”
She continued the case until 8 July for both Melnikovs and Inkster to appear in person.
