Island up for grabs as Hildasay goes on the market
A RARE chance has emerged for someone to buy one of Shetland’s uninhabited islands.
The island of Hildasay, located off Scalloway, is being sold for offers over £350,000.
It covers an area of around 110 hectares and includes its own pier and a traditional bothy-type building.
Kelvin Anderson, of estate agents EXP, said Hildasay was a “truly distinctive property offering privacy, scale and heritage in one of Britain’s most remarkable island settings”.
The island, which has been uninhabited since the 19th Century, has a history involving both fish curing and granite quarrying.
It had a small railway track which was used to transport the granite in decades gone by.
In more recent years, the island was in the limelight for hosting charity coastline adventurer Chris Lewis during the Covid pandemic.
He ultimately released a book called Finding Hildasay which documented his travels around the UK coastline.
Anderson said the island also features two freshwater lochs, adding that it is also rich in wildlife.
He said in a post on social media that Hildasay offers a “remarkable combination of seclusion, natural beauty and heritage, while remaining within easy reach of the Shetland Mainland”.
It is not the only Shetland island to have been sold in recent years, with Vaila and Linga also changing hands.
