Plenty happening at Business Gateway Shetland this autumn
It hardly seems possible that we’re already thinking about autumn, but we’ve got a busy few months ahead and lots of opportunities for local businesses to get involved.
Whether you’re running an established business, just getting started, or simply have an idea you’d like to explore, we’d love to connect with you.
We’ll be kicking things off at the Cunningsburgh Show on 12 August. We always enjoy getting out and meeting people face-to-face, so if you’re heading along, please stop by for a chat. You don’t need to have a fully-fledged business to come and see us – whether you’re at the ideas stage or already well established, we’re always happy to talk through what’s available and how we might be able to help.
In September, our adviser Genevieve White will be hosting Breathe, Speak, Repeat on 9 September. Let’s be honest – public speaking isn’t something many of us enjoy! Whether it’s introducing yourself at a networking event, talking about your business or pitching your products to a wholesale buyer, it can feel pretty daunting.
This workshop is all about building confidence in a supportive environment and helping people find practical ways to communicate more comfortably and effectively. It’s particularly aimed at those who don’t see themselves as natural speakers but would like to feel a bit more confident when the occasion arises.
We’re also looking forward to working with the Islands Entrepreneurial Network at Robert Gordon University to host a relaxed lunchtime Networking Event on 2 October. We all know that some of the best opportunities come from conversations, and this event is designed to create space for exactly that.
It will be a chance to meet other business owners, make new connections, share experiences and find out more about the support available through both organisations. No presentations marathons, no pressure – just good conversation, networking and the opportunity to build relationships across Shetland’s business community.
And looking ahead to November, we’ll soon be opening applications for the sixth cohort of our Realise Programme. Since launching in 2020, Realise has supported women in business across Shetland, providing a space to step back from the day-to-day, focus on personal and business development, and connect with a small group of peers who understand the challenges of running a business. One of the things participants tell us time and again is that the connections they make through Realise often last long after the programme ends.
