Hundreds turn out to celebrate diversity and tolerance
LERWICK’s streets were a sea of rainbow colours as hundreds of people gathered in the town for the annual Pride parade on Saturday morning.
Led by the Bigton samba band a colourful array of drag acts, rainbow flags and smiling faces made their way from the Market Cross to the Anderson High School.
It’s the fifth time Shetland Pride has hosted a festival of fun, bright colours and a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Pride Village will this year be held at the Sound Hall until 4pm, and will feature the usual array of local stallholders, bairns’ games, arts and crafts, and food.
There will also be parties at night – one at the Sound Hall for over 18s, and another at the Lerwick Legion for youngsters.
Shetland Pride chair Sarah Cooper said the event was not so much a parade but a protest.
Shetland’s newly elected MSP Hannah Mary Goodlad said it was important to show unity and support for minorities.
