A MAN was taken to hospital after a crash which caused the closure of a road near Nesting on Wednesday night.

Police Scotland said officers were called to a report of a single vehicle crash at around 6.15pm on the B9075 road on Wednesday.

One man was taken to hospital, and enquiries are ongoing.

The road was temporarily blocked just past the Catfirth junction on the road into Nesting, with drivers asked to divert via North Nesting.

Emergency services including police and the ambulance service attended.

SHETLAND Befriending Scheme has become an independent charity, ending 25 years as part of Voluntary Action Shetland.

It said the move marked a “significant milestone for the organisation”, adding it would give it “greater autonomy and flexibility”.

The service offers friendship and support to young people and adults experiencing loneliness and isolation throughout Shetland.

Service manager Mairi Jamieson said it was an “exciting step” for the scheme.

“We are confident it will allow us to further strengthen our support for people across Shetland,” she said.

“We are grateful for the partnership and guidance provided by Voluntary Action Shetland over the years and look forward to building on that foundation as an independent organisation.”

Voluntary Action Shetland executive officer Lynn Tulloch added this was “such a positive step” for the befriending service.

“Going independent will support the development and growth of the newly established charity to continue to meet local needs,” she said.

Shetland Befriending Scheme has reassured all service users, volunteers, and partners that there will be no disruption to services as a result.

This is to allow for the installation of electric cables under the road.

Contractors will carry out the work overnight and the road is expected to be open again to through traffic each day from 7am.

The road is expected to fully reopen on Monday 6 April.

The alternative route for traffic during the period of closure is via Gremista Brae and Ladies Drive.

During the overnight closures, public buses for Scalloway, Walls and Mossbank/Toft will not be able to stop at Lerwick Power Station.

Morning services will pass along this route after 7am and so are unaffected.

THE ANNUAL celebration of local film-making talent, HomeMade, is set to return bigger than ever this year.

As well as the regular screening of films up to four minutes long, an additional screening of films ranging from four to 12 minutes will be launched – aimed at more experienced film-makers.

The screenings will take place on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September at Mareel.

Kathy Hubbard, who is part of the HomeMade curation team said the longer screening event had been added “in response to feedback from previous film makers and audiences”.

There will be support from Shetland ForWirds, who will offer their annual award for the most effective use of Shaetlan, and the audience will get to choose their favourite on the day for the 0-4 minute event.

Curated by volunteers Hubbard, Cara McDiarmid and Logan Nicolson, HomeMade was a perennial audience favourite at the former Screenplay Film Festival.

The submission deadline for the 4-12 minute films is Friday 17 July at midnight, while it is Friday 31 July at midnight for the 0-4 minute event.
