Election / Fishing industry to host its own election hustings

ANYONE with an interest in the future of the fishing industry is being invited to an election hustings in Lerwick next week.

Hosted by the Shetland Fishermen’s Association (SFA) and the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF), in association with Shetland News, the event has been organised to allow candidates to be scrutinised on their policies relating to the sector.

The event is one of a series of election hustings the SFF has organised throughout the country.

It is designed not only for active fishermen, but also for those working across the wider supply chain, as well as individuals with a professional or personal interest in the sector.

SFF chief executive Elspeth Macdonald said: “It is important that we hear from candidates for the Shetland constituency their proposals for the fishing industry prior to polling day, and subject them to scrutiny.

“It would be great to see a strong turnout of voters – you will be made very welcome.”

Local organiser Sheila Keith of the SFA added: “Your perspective is valuable, and your presence will help ensure that the concerns and priorities of Shetland’s fishing community are clearly heard.

“A strong turnout will send a strong message about the importance of our industry and the people who depend on it.”

The hustings will take place in the Lerwick Town Hall on Wednesday 8 April between 6pm and 8pm.

Those planning to attend are asked to fill in this short online registration form: https://forms.gle/NtWs4J1WbtTmbKg76
