SHETLAND retained the B team netball inter-county title with a home victory over Orkney at the Clickimin this weekend.

Having lifted the cup in Orkney 12 months ago, the blues held onto the trophy after a 56-27 dismantling of their great rivals in Lerwick on Saturday afternoon.

There was to be no home double however, as the reds overcame Shetland 57-42 in a narrow A match to ensure they took the A title south with them.

It capped off a great weekend for the sport both at home and on the mainland, with Anderson High School being crowned the winners of the Scottish schools open cup on Friday.

In a final described as being an “instant classic”, the lasses held their nerve to beat Robert Gordon’s college 49-43 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

TWO Shetlanders set new world records at the aptly named “record-breakers” event held by the World Deadlift Council in Glasgow on Saturday.

Bryan Pearson and Shauna Moar.

Shauna Moar beat the overall women’s world record in the trap bar deadlift with a lift of 285kg – three times her bodyweight – to give her the title overall world champion.

The achievement means Moar has retained the women’s world record in the under-85kg, keeping her unbeaten for a remarkable sixth consecutive year.

She also retained both the U85kg and overall trap bar Scottish records.

Shetlander Bryan Pearson also beat both the Scottish and world record in the trap bar, with a lift of 310kg in the 50+ age, under-90kg weight category.

Rory was the most experienced of the group, having raced on the mainland before, while Cora and Ellie have previously competed in Orkney.

For the remaining swimmers, Inverness marked their first major away meet.

Some of the highlights included Cora taking 8.85 seconds off her 100m butterfly, Rory achieving 6.67s PB in 100m breaststroke and Jacob taking a huge 16.93s off his best 50m butterfly.

Oliver topped his 50m freestyle heat, while Aleks, Bobby, Ellie and Freya all produced PBs as the group impressed on the mainland.

In the boys’ 10 and under 200m freestyle relay, Jacob, Oliver, Bobby and Aleks combined to win a well earned silver medal.

Their coaches praised the swimmers for their effort, team spirit and professionalism throughout the trip, while the club thanked NorthLink Ferries for their sponsorship.

THE FINAL group matches in the Highland Fuels Cup will be played this week after weather postponements on Friday.

Whalsay and Ness will meet tonight (Monday) at 8pm on the 3G North Loch Park, before Spurs and Celtic face each other on Wednesday.

Victory for Whalsay will see them through to the semi-finals, while any other result will ensure Ness instead go through to the last four.

A win or draw for Celtic will put them through, though the side will already be into the semi-finals if Whalsay lose tonight.

No date has been set for the other postponed match, between Whitedale and Thistle, as yet.

The semi-finals had been due to be played tonight and Wednesday, but will now have to be moved. The cup final on Saturday will also likely have to be moved.

The first cup final of the season will see Ness C meet Bressay Sharks in the Championship league cup on Friday night.

Ness C booked a place in the last two after beating Championship holders North Isles 4-0 on Saturday, before Bressay came from behind to beat Southside Impact 5-1 to set up the showpiece.

The final kicks-off at North Loch Park at 6.30pm on Friday.

POSTIES have been crowned winners of the Shetland men’s darts premier division for a second successive year.

The town team narrowly saw Sandwick Arrows, who did not lose a single game all season, off to retain the trophy.

Delting Boating Club won the first division title to earn promotion to the top league, and will be joined by MegaDerts next season.

Nil Point were the trophy winners in the second division, with Gypsyaires following them up into the first division.
