Council / Legion applies for late licence to screen Scotland World Cup match

THE LERWICK Legion has applied for an alcohol licence until 4am to screen Scotland men’s historic first World Cup fixture in 28 years.

Shetland Islands Council’s licensing board will consider a request for a special alcohol licence for the Lerwick Legion from 1 to 4am on the morning of Sunday 14 June.

That is so the pub can show Scotland’s opening World Cup game against Haiti in Boston, which kicks off at 2am local time.

The local licensing standards officer said it was up to the board to decide whether to grant the additional license ahead of the fixture.

“The board may consider this event to be of national significance, as it marks the first time this century that Scotland has qualified for the World Cup,” it said.

It said that the Scottish Government had provided temporary guidance on late licences to screen games at the 2026 World Cup, with relevant issues for the board to consider.

One of those, it said, was that the Scottish Government had said children and young people under the age of 18 should not be admitted during any period of later opening.

However the Legion’s application had stated that 12-17 year olds would be allowed in, if accompanied by an adult, to watch the Scotland game in its lounge bar.

The Scottish Government also said there was the likelihood that the Haiti match would not be finished until around 4.15 or 4.30am, depending on the amount of time added on.

Police raised no objections to the Legion’s application.

The Scotland team kick off their first World Cup campaign since 1998 against Haiti in Boston on Saturday 13 June at 9pm in the United States, with the game beginning at 2am on Sunday 14 June on UK time.

Their second match is against Morocco on Friday 19 June, which kicks off at 11pm UK time, before concluding the group against Brazil on Miami on Wednesday 24 June – again 11pm UK time.
