Police / Visiting road policing officers detect number of offences

ROAD policing officers say they detected a number of offences in Shetland during a recent visit to the isles.

Over a two-day visit in support of the Lerwick Up Helly Aa a total of 49 vehicles were stopped.

In terms of offences detected, there 13 instances of speeding, four occasions where seatbelts were not being worn and two insecure loads.

There was also one offence involving no insurance, no MOT, dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

Warnings were issued for 13 speeding offences, one instance of careless driving, two insecure load offences and six lighting and licence plate offences.

Constable Curley said: “Whether you’re heading to work, taking the kids to school, visiting family or moving between the many communities of Shetland, we know how important road safety is to the local community.

“We are committed to improving roads safety across the Highlands and Islands.

“Not wearing a seatbelt, speeding and careless driving are three of the five most prevalent causation factors in serious and fatal road traffic collisions.

“We address offences through a combination of education and enforcement with the simple aim of reducing road casualties.”
