News / Flooding in Tingwall garden and reports of standing water on roads after heavy rain
THE FIRE brigade had to pump water from the garden of a home in a Tingwall housing development after heavy rain on Tuesday.
The road into Gaet-a-Gott also had to be closed late on Tuesday night after drains in the area blocked and overran.
Glenn Snabel and Frances Hornal’s home was worst affected, with the fire brigade spending hours pumping water out of their garden after it reached their house.
Snabel, who posted a photo of the flooding on social media, told Shetland News the fire brigade had done a “fantastic job” and had ensured no water entered their home.
One appliance was called to the scene at 10.15pm, with the crew only leaving at around 1.30am on Wednesday morning once the water was cleared.
However Snabel said the road was still flooded when they left due to the blocked drains at the Gaet-a-Gott junction.
Writing on social media this morning, Hornal said they had written to Shetland Islands Council to ask them to come out and clear the drains.
The SIC said its road engineers were alerted by police to the flooding late last night, and had attended with sandbags to redirect water away from nearby properties.
“We’re aware there has been significant standing water across the roads network from time to time, but we’ve not been contacted with reports of any other significant issues,” the council added.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it tasked one appliance with clearing the water on Tuesday night, with the road closed by police and pumps used to drain the garden.
Sandbags were also used to ensure no water entered the property, it added.
It was not the only report of flooding on Tuesday night, with road users taking to social media to flag up hazards in the West Mainland, Burra and Tingwall valley.
There was a large amount of standing water before the Kergord and Cott junctions, while one person posted a video of standing water before the junction to Hamnavoe in Burra.
