Community / ‘Shetland wouldn’t be Shetland’ without dedication of award-winning volunteers
VOLUNTEERS the length and breadth of Shetland have been celebrated through Voluntary Action Shetland’s (VAS) annual awards.
A total of 48 people were awarded certificates through the 2025 awards, VAS said.
Forty two adults aged 26 and over were celebrated with Willin Haands awards, while six bairns under the age of 12 were given Peerie Trows certificates.
The awards are nomination-based, with each person being nominated receiving a certificate of recognition for their outstanding efforts in their communities and with various organisations.
The aim of the awards is to recognise both formal and informal volunteering taking place everyday throughout Shetland.
VAS said supporters had praised the “acts of kindness” that the award-winners provide around Shetland, from being good neighbours to supporting vulnerable folk, and from years of volunteering to helping at local clubs and halls.
The charity’s volunteer development worker Kathleen Williamson said it had been “a pleasure administering the awards and reading all about the fantastic volunteering taking place throughout the islands”.
“Shetland would not be Shetland without all the efforts of volunteers and the kindness and community spirit taking place formally and informally throughout our islands.”
VAS gave a big “thank you” to everyone who nominated someone, and passed on its congratulations to all award recipients.
