PLANNING permission has been granted for a potential new combined footpath and cycle path in Gott.

Win Furt, which is leading the project, has said it is “delighted” to get the go-ahead from the council to proceed with the plans.

The group was specifically set up to get people out and about in Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale.

Construction on the project is only expected to begin in spring 2026.

CASE Shetland was appointed in January to produce a design for a stretch of combined footpath and cycle path in Gott, running from the Califf/Breiwick junction to the corner of the Laxfirth road.

Win Furt chairman Andrew Archer said it had been a “bit of a slog” to get planning permission for the project, but added it was a “major milestone” for them.

“The next step is to sort out funding for the construction phase and we are actively talking to people about that now,” he said.

“That is going to take a while to sort out so, realistically, it will be next spring at the earliest before any construction starts.”
