Weather / New UK record for October low pressure set in Baltasound

Meanwhile SSEN is reporting power cuts today (Sunday) in areas such as Burra and parts of the Westside

A NEW low air pressure record for the UK has been set in Unst as ‘Storm Amy’ made its presence felt in Shetland.

The pressure of 947.9 hPa, recorded at Baltasound overnight from Friday to Saturday, has provisionally set a new UK lowest pressure record for October, the Met Office said.

The previous record for October was 950.9 hPa set at Muckle Flugga in 1988.

The Met Office said low pressure leads to unsettled weather. An explanation on its website says: “In a depression (low pressure), air is rising and blows in an anticlockwise direction around the low (in the northern hemisphere).

“As it rises and cools, water vapour condenses to form clouds and perhaps precipitation. This is why the weather in a depression is often unsettled, there are usually weather fronts associated with depressions.”

Winds picked up in Shetland on Friday to kick off a weekend of unsettled, windy weather.

SSEN is reporting power cuts today (Sunday) in areas such as Burra and parts of the Westside.

Its Power Track website is suggesting the company aims to get people reconnected by 8pm on Monday (6 October).

All NorthLink ferries between Aberdeen and Lerwick were cancelled on Friday and Saturday night, with services due to resume today (Sunday).

The weather has caused disruption to Shetland’s inter-island ferries too.

SEPA also issued a flood alert for Shetland on Saturday into Sunday morning.
