Sport / Sporting round-up 8 September
WHITEDALE have clinched netball’s Parish Cup for a third successive year after pipping Whalsay in the final.
The holders came into the clash having never lost a match in the tournament’s three year existence, and looking to retain the title they have never relinquished since first lifting in 2023.
And a 34-28 win at Clickimin on Saturday afternoon ensured that Whitedale will hold onto the trophy for another year at least.
Maisie Arthur was voted their player of the match, while Shelley Anderson took the plaudits for Whalsay.
THERE was more trophy success for Whitedale on Saturday too, this time on the football pitch.
Whitedale B capped off another superb season by lifting the Bloomfield Cup at Seafield after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Delting in the final.
Despite beating the same opponents 6-1 just over a week before, this was a much closer encounter between the sides – who also contested last season’s Bloomfield final, where Delting came out on top.
This time, however, goals from Joe Haddon and Jos Hatrick ensured the trophy headed west, with Delting’s response coming from Iain Devonald.
It follows Whitedale B’s success in the DITT Reserve League, where they won their final match to finish three points clear of Spurs B to win the league for an unprecedented third successive season.
Before Whitedale B’s spell of dominance in the tournament no team had retained the title since Whalsay B in 2008 – but no side has ever won it three years on the trot until now.
SHETLAND beat Orkney comfortably in the women’s golf inter-county at Dale on Sunday.
The blues, consisting of players from the Dale and Whalsay clubs, saw off their county rivals 15-3 on the day.
Conditions were windy but dry and bright for the teams, who enjoyed a meal and presentation after the golfing action.

Dale ladies captain Patricia Parham gave special thanks to all the players for their help over the weekend, and to Kay for working in the bar and during the meal.
SPURS and Whitedale will meet on Monday night to decide the Ocean Kinetics Premier League winners for 2025.
The two sides face a play-off for the title after finishing the season locked on 27 points.
Whitedale are looking to end a wait to be crowned league champions that stretches back to 2018, while Spurs are aiming to win their third league title in the last five years.
The game kicks off at Scalloway’s Fraser Park – chosen as a neutral venue – at 6pm tonight (Monday).
If it is a draw after 90 minutes, the game will go straight to penalties to decide the outcome.
GOALKEEPER Henry Oldbury was in the sticks for Golspie Sutherland on Saturday as they beat Clachnacuddin in the Jock Mackay Cup first round.
Golspie were 5-2 winners on the day to secure safe passage to the next round.
Spencer Moreland started for Brechin City on Saturday but it was a disappointing day in the Highland League for his side.
Brechin took the lead and saw opponents Formartine United reduced to 10 men after just two minutes in the fixture.
But Formartine produced a sensational comeback to win the game 3-1 despite their numerical disadvantage.
SHETLAND Valkyries started their season with a 38-19 win over Highland at their temporary Gilbertson Park home on Sunday.
The side began their Caledonia division 1 campaign with a home victory, which saw Fiona Polson named forward of the match and Freya Laurenson take the back of the match honours.
Ealasaid Nicleoid was named player of the match by Highland.
They follow that game up with an away trip to Inverness this Saturday to take on Inverness Craig Dunain.
The men’s team were unable to field a team against Gordonian’s 2nd this weekend, with the game now rescheduled for next year.
Shetland have been deducted three points as a result.
