News / Dogs Against Drugs praised after £3,000 of substances recovered
A QUANTITY of drugs have been taken off the streets of Lerwick in the last week after a series of pro-active police stops.
Area commander Chris Sewell praised the work of local charity Dogs Against Drugs after they were involved with two of the incidents, one of which saw drugs with a street value in excess of £3,000 seized.
Police officers stopped a 31-year old man in Lerwick’s North Road in the early hours of Saturday 30 August, and discovered a quantity of crack cocaine in his possession.
On Thursday, as a result of a pro-active policing operation, benzodiazepine with a street value of around £270 was recovered from an address in Lerwick with the help of Dogs Against Drugs.
And again on Friday the charity helped find class A and class B drugs worth in excess of £3,000 on a 54-year old male in Lerwick.
Sewell said enquiries are ongoing in relation to the benzodiazepine matter, and the 54-year old will be subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal.
“Serious and organised criminals seek to profit by exploiting the most vulnerable individuals in our communities,” Sewell said.
“Shetlanders should be reassured that Police Scotland will relentlessly pursue those individuals and work closely with partner agencies to keep people safe.”
“We are grateful to the community for the support they continue to show and would encourage anyone with concerns regarding drug dealing to report.
“Members of the public can share information by calling 101, reporting anonymously online via Crimestoppers, or by visiting Lerwick police office to speak with a local officer in confidence.”
