PLANNED maintenance work on the linkspans at West Burrafirth and Papa Stour ferry terminals has been further delayed.

Works at the West Burrafirth side was due to commence on Monday (11 August) but will begin one week later, due to recent weather conditions.

A council spokesperson said the maintenance involves major structural work which will require the linkspans to be taken out of use.

“The linkspan will be removed after the last sailings on the previous Monday and will be replaced in time for the next sailings on Friday morning,” they said.

“Vehicle access to the Papa Stour ferry will not be possible between these times.”

Ferry sailings on the Papa Stour route are for bookings only, for bookings contact01595 745804.

Revised dates for works on the Papa Stour linkspan are not yet confirmed.

ADHD therapist, book author and councillor Sarah Templeton is set to visit Shetland to deliver training sessions for council employees, as well as for parents, carers and those living with condition.

She will also attend a public event on 19 August, hosted by Ability Shetland and the Shetland Library.

Templeton is a passionate and relentless advocate for adolescents and adults with unrecognised or late-diagnosed ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Her work has made her a respected voice in the movement for early diagnosis and intervention, and keeping ADHD individuals free from drugs, addiction, and the criminal justice system.

The event in the library starts at 6.15pm with a short presentation followed by a Q&A session.

An ice cream van and food truck will be in the beach car park to sustain the nature exploration, and field parking will be available to the public.

Community engagement officer Ali Robertson said: “Last year, RSPB Shetland welcomed around 250 people to Spiggie Open Day, and it was wonderful seeing everyone connecting with each other whilst connecting with the nature around us, so we were keen to repeat the event this year.

“RSPB Shetland do a range of conservation efforts at Spiggie, and the area is a great example of the benefits to nature that can come from a positive and collaborative relationship with local landowners.”

In recent years, RSPB Shetland have installed a fully-accessible community hide at Loch of Spiggie, and worked with local schools to create a mural on the inside.
