Weather / Shetland experiences warmest July on record
SHETLAND has recorded its hottest July since the Met Office began collecting data in 1884.
The average temperature for the month in Shetland was 14.9°C, beating the previous record of 14.6°C in 2003, the Met Office said.
Temperatures reached 17.7°C – Shetland’s highest in July since 1884, according to the Met Office – and only dropped as low as 12.1°C during the whole month.
That low temperature also almost set a new record as the warmest ‘low’ temperature for July, falling just below the 12.2°C set in 2003.
Just 40.7mm of rain fell across the whole month, just over half the average rainfall for a July in Shetland, with 211.1 hours of sunshine recorded.
The Met Office said that the hours of sunshine in Shetland across July was 169 per cent above the average for July.
That average temperature for July 2025 is also 2.5°C above Shetland’s long-term meteorological average for July over the years.
It comes as the Met Office said that the UK had its fifth warmest July on record, with Shetland and Orkney both having their hottest Julys since records began.
July began with the hottest temperature of the year so far, reaching 35.8°C in Faversham, Kent.
Provisional data shows the UK average temperature for July was 16.8°C, making it the warmest since 2018.
