Community / Family fun in store at Scalloway summer foy

A CARNIVAL procession, stalls, rubber duck racing, piano smashing and much more – there will be plenty to see and do in Scalloway this Saturday.

The village will host a family-friendly foy from midday through to night, with proceeds from the event set to raise money for both Prostate Scotland and the local fire festival.

It echoes parts of the gala day that used to be held in Scalloway a number of years ago.

One of the organisers Julie Riddell said: “Hopefully it will take off and ideally maybe be an annual fundraiser as well”.

She said it has been a lot of work to get everything together – with the organisers, from the Scalloway Fire Festival fundraising committee, now hoping for “good weather and good turnout”.

The summer foy will opens at noon, with rubber duck races taking place at the burn across from the fire station.

There will also be a jarl squads five-a-side football tournament in Fraser Park, as well as some ‘sports day’ athletics for bairns – with the latter running between 2pm and 4pm.

Between 12pm and 4pm there will be a range of other activities, including stalls in a marquee at Fraser Park, beat the goalie, a treasure hunt and an emergency services display.

There will also be food on offer such as burgers, pizza and ice cream, as well as tea and homebakes in the youth centre and cocktails in the galley shed from Jonny Sandison.

At 6pm a carnival procession with floats and jarl squads will start at the boating club and make its way through Main Street, heading up Chapel Lane and Houl Road before running through Meadowfield Road.

The procession will then turn into Craigpark Road and head to Lovers Lane and New Road before ending at Main Street.

After the carnival procession there will be a Shetland jarl squads piano breaking competition at the muckle yard, and then an ale drinking relay race.

Revellers can dance the night away with live music by Fully Licensed and Joking Aside at the Scalloway Hall from 8pm to late, which is for over 18s only.

Meanwhile preparations are well underway for the start of the agricultural show season in Voe.

The Voe Show is also taking place on Saturday, with judging from 9am to midday – with no access to exhibit areas while this is taking place.

Some of the other attractions there include trade and craft stands, live music, tug of war, jarl squads and a beer tent.

The Dead Pans will be playing the Voe Show dance at the village’s hall at night, but it is sold out.
