Transport / Voe speed limit expected to lower to 40mph in September

THE SPEED limit through the village of Voe is set to drop from 50mph to 40mph after no objections were received to the proposal.

Shetland Islands Council’s roads manager Neil Hutcheson said a traffic order will be made this week, “as will the issuing of the works order to our contractor for the installation of the 40mph signs”.

Road safety has been a regular issue for residents of Voe, with a public meeting held on the topic back in 2023.

Hutcheson said 40mph countdown signs will also be installed on the A970 on the approach into Voe from Brae.

“These are not an item we hold in stock so they are being ordered from a mainland supplier, which will mean it will be toward the end of the summer before they are delivered and we have them in place,” he added.

“Therefore, the traffic order and the 40mph limit will come into operation in September 2025.”

It comes as more reduced 20mph zones are being introduced in residential parts of Lerwick – with Scalloway to follow soon.
