JUNIOR inter-county captain Layla Todd had the perfect warm-up for this weekend’s event after shattering another longstanding Shetland athletics record.

Layla Todd (right) set a new 3,000m Shetland record in Glasgow.

Just a month after setting a new 5K record for Shetland in a time of 16:43, Todd smashed the 3,000m best time by crossing the line in 9:43.

That beat the previous record by a whole 15 seconds.

Todd was also second across the line at the Glasgow Athletics Association miler meet and Scottish Athletics U20 championships, earning her the silver medal.

She will now lead out team Shetland at this weekend’s junior inter-county, with the athletics team taking to the Clickimin track at 10am.

SHETLAND’S men’s and women’s football teams have discovered their schedules for July’s Island Games in Orkney.

There is a boost for supporters travelling down from the isles to support the blues, with all of their group games to take place in Kirkwall.

The women’s team will play their first game in the competition for 20 years on Sunday 13 July, kicking off against the Isle of Wight at Kirkwall Grammar School’s pitch two at 12pm.

Immediately after the men’s team will play Gozo on the same pitch with a 3.30pm kick off, and will be looking to get their group stage campaign off to a positive start.

On Monday 14 July the women’s team will take on Jersey – again on Kirkwall Grammar School’s pitch two – in the afternoon, with another 3.30pm kick off.

The men’s team have a day off on Monday due to their being just three games in their group, with their opponents Jersey and Gozo meeting at 12pm in Holm.

On Tuesday 15 July all of the women’s games will kick off at the same time as the groups come to a close, with Shetland facing the daunting task of taking on gold medallists Bermuda at 3.30pm – again on Kirkwall Grammar School’s pitch two.

Then attentions will turn to the culmination of the men’s groups, with Shetland facing a potentially decisive clash with Jersey on the same pitch at 7pm.

Both teams will then play on Thursday 17 July after a rest day, either in the placing play-offs or the semi-finals.

Should they make it to the semi-finals, they will then play on Friday 18 July in either the bronze medal matches or the finals – all of which will take place in Kirkwall.

WHALSAY and Lerwick Spurs surged into the last 16 of the Highland Amateur Cup after comprehensive victories on the mainland on Saturday.

And there could even be an all-Shetland tie in the next round if Scalloway can navigate through their postponed fixture.

Whalsay hammered Portree 6-0 to progress to the last 16 of the Highland Amateur Cup.

Whalsay had a comfortable win over Portree in Fortrose, with two goals in 20 minutes seeing them immediately race into the lead.

A double from Euan Irvine and goals from Neil Laurenson, Ethan Rathore, Colin Anderson and Richard Arthur ensured Whalsay eventually ran out 6-0 winners.

Spurs had to do it the hard way, initially going a goal down to Westside FC before defender Andrew Flett levelled just before half-time.

Second half goals from Lewis Harkness, Connel Gresham and Sam Maver helped Spurs overcome Westside 4-1 to continue their Highland Amateur Cup foray.

Next up for Spurs is a trip to face Maryburgh on 21 June.

Whalsay meanwhile will have to wait to find out their opponents, with Scalloway one of those that they could face.

Scalloway’s match with Iochdar Saints was postponed at the weekend, and either of those two – or Stornoway United – will take on Whalsay in round three.

MEANWHILE there was only one Ocean Kinetics Premier League match on Friday due to the Highland Amateur Cup, but spectators were in no way shortchanged.

Thistle and Whitedale played out an incredible 11-goal thriller at Seafield, which saw the jags narrowly edge the encounter.

Having failed to score in their first two league games, Thistle made up for lost time by putting six past Whitedale in a 6-5 victory.

Braces from Calvin Leask and Gary Sim helped the jags on their way to three points, with Fraser Watt and Brooklyn Chattell netting the other goals.

Ryan Gerrard, Greg Tulloch, Bobby Scott, Jos Hatrick and Ewan Inkster were all on the scoresheet for Whitedale, but it was not enough for them to earn even a point and they now slip to the bottom of the league table.

There was one fixture played in the Jewson Championship over the weekend, with Wastside Rebels beating Banks 6-2 in their rescheduled fixture.

Jamie Wilson scored twice for the home side in Aith, with Bryan Manson, Magni Einarsson, Rhys Hughson and Nathan Woodhouse also netting for Rebels.

Jonathan Williamson and Isaac Chapman responded for Banks.

SHETLAND’S District Cup winning side gave Noost owner Duncan Clubb his own cup final winners medal during a celebration visit on Friday night.

Da Noost had held a watchalong party for the blues’ supporters on District Cup final day, which allowed people to roar the team on to success from back home.

To repay his support the women’s team visited the Noost on Friday to gift Clubb his own winners medal and to get a photo outside the venue.

The team are next back in action when they host rivals Orkney in the annual inter-county fixture in Brae on Saturday 26 July, looking to win the fixture for a third year in a row.
