Transport / Internet upgrade for NorthLink’s ferries
DIGITAL connectivity on board the NorthLink passenger ferries is set to improve.
NorthLink Ferries managing director Stuart Garrett said the company is in the process of switching its onboard Wi-Fi internet provider to satellite firm Starlink.
Speaking at a meeting of the Shetland external transport forum in Lerwick on Tuesday, he said: “I travelled last night and I had Wi-Fi, and anyone I spoke to had Wi-Fi.”
The internet connection on board the north boats has come in for some criticism over the years due to its reliability and performance.
Local councillor Gary Robinson said he has campaigned for better connectivity on board for a number of years.
He said he was therefore “delighted” that the internet on NorthLink’s passenger vessels is being upgraded.
“When passengers spend up to 14 hours aboard the ferries between Shetland and Aberdeen, modern, reliable broadband is essential,” Robinson commented.
“I recently pressed the business minister, Richard Lochhead, on this matter and I’m very pleased that the Scottish Government and the ferry operator have delivered.
“While good broadband may be a ‘nice to have’ for families or individuals, it’s essential for many business people to be able to continue to work and stay connected while travelling.
“I understand that connectivity will be improved throughout the vessels, including inner and outer cabins.”
At Tuesday’s meeting Garrett added that the service may dip depending on how many people were travelling, adding: “It’s not made for streaming in 4K or downloading films.”
“We’ve extended the nodules throughout the vessel to try and make sure there’s no blank spots,” he continued.
“That’s all up and running now.”
