Sport / Shetland names biggest ever team for Orkney Island Games

SHETLAND has named its biggest ever team for an Island Games ahead of this July’s event in Orkney.

The 175-strong team was announced by Shetland Islands Games Association (SIGA) today, with 146 competitors and 29 officials making the short journey south.

Shetland will be represented in all 12 sports offered this year – archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, lawn bowls, sailing, squash, swimming and triathlon.

With less than two months until the opening ceremony at Bignold Park in Kirkwall on Saturday 12 July, preparations for the games are ramping up.

Over 2,000 competitors from 24 island teams are expected to take part in this year’s Island Games, with Orkney set to become the smallest island group to host the event.

Swimmer Jasmin Smith, who won silver and bronze medals at the last games in Guernsey in 2023, is among the medal hopefuls for the blues again this summer.

Sprinter Katie Dinwoodie, who won two bronze medals two years ago, will again go in search of medals at the games.

Shetland will also have a team taking part in the lawn bowls event, which is appearing for the first time at the games, while the women’s football team are making their first appearance since the 2005 games in Shetland.

Local marine engineering specialist Malakoff Limited is again the official team sponsor this year, a role the company has fulfilled since 2013.

Its financial support will help fund the costs of team Shetland’s travel and accommodation for this year’s games, and Malakoff’s Ryan Stevenson said they were “proud to be able to continue to support” the team.

“The company and its staff would like to wish the team the very best of luck in this year’s games in Orkney,” he added.

SIGA chairwoman Lesley Hutchison said Orkney was a “familiar place” for many Shetland athletes, and they were “looking forward to some exciting competition across all the games venues.

“I’d really like to thank our official team sponsor Malakoff Limited for supporting us again – it’s great to have them behind us 2025 games,” she added.
