MORE than £1,000 has been raised for the Tingwall under fives group after bairns took part in a sponsored “toddle” at the Clickimin running track.

The children did one lap around the track earlier today (Wednesday).

Money raised will go towards the running costs of the group, plus days out, toys and special events.

Tingwall Under Fives secretary Jolene Garriock said toddler groups have struggled since Covid, with the restrictions causing difficulties for fundraising.

“We’ve been doing a lot of fundraising over the last year and this was the final event of our fundraising efforts for just now,” she said.

“We wanted to make a big thing out of it, not just because of the money but to start teaching our kids how important fundraising is for voluntary groups.

“Seeing people supporting them and cheering them on really made them feel special. After the toddle, they all got medals for taking part.”

Garriock added that as a new mother, the Tingwall Under Fives group was “exactly what my son Tommy and I needed” when they started going two and a half years ago.

“It provides the opportunity for parents to get together and discuss things that are happening with their children, while the kids get a chance to socialise, develop new skills and have fun,” she said.

An online donations page for the sponsored toddle will remain open for another week or so.

Organisers also wished to thank Shetland Recreational Trust for the use of the running track, Cee and Jay’s for providing medals and Tesco for providing snacks for after.
