Community / Golfer to take on all-day challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s charity
A GOLFER is set to play from day to night later this month to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
Ian Pottinger, 68, will play four consecutive 18 holes at the Shetland Golf Club course at Dale on Monday 29 May.
He is raising money for the local branch of Alzheimer Scotland. An online fundraising page can be found here.
Pottinger’s wife has had early onset dementia for three and a half years and his older brother also lives with the condition.
It will not be a solitary challenge, with people set to join him on each round.
“What I’m trying to do is involve folk who are members that have had experience of dementia, through current partners or family who have died,” Pottinger said.
The first round will tee off at around 7am with a group of people who have had experience of Alzheimer’s/dementia.
There will then be rounds at 11am, the back of three and 7.30pm – finishing at around midnight.
“There will be a bit of spaegie the next day, but I will get over that,” Pottinger said.
“It will be tough going. I do play in the Shetland open which is two rounds, and that’s a fair trek with a break in between. So this will be a sore on the feet job.”
The fundraiser launched on Thursday, and already it has secured nearly £2,500 in donations.
It will also be held on what will be the start of a Shetland dementia awareness week.
