Court / Court round up 16 March 2023
A PENSIONER from Tingwall has been fined £500 and ordered to pay £250 in compensation after assaulting a female member of the bar staff at Mareel.
Ronald Jamieson, of Griesta, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of assaulting the woman by grabbing around her waist, stroking her hair and thereafter placing his hand on her bottom and sliding down the inner side of her leg on 18 May last year.
Defence solicitor Gregor Kelly said his 70-year-old client accepts that his conduct was shameful but maintains that his motivation was not sexual.
He said he was grateful to the Crown for amending the charge after accepting that the sexual element in the charge was not significant.
Kelly added that Jamieson wishes to extend apologies to the young woman and is anxious to draw a line under the matter.
A CROFTER from Fetlar was found guilty of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards a deckhand on board a council-run ferry following a short trial.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard two very different versions of what exactly was said after a query over a ferry fare for a trailer on board the Yell Sound ferry Daggri on 19 August last year.
Both parties involved are neighbours on the island Fetlar and relationships are not said to be good.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank found Paul Fowler, of Midhouse, guilty of behaving in a threatening manner and deferred sentence for six months for good behaviour.
However, the 58-year-old was fined £360 for a firearms offence which came to light when police turned up at his home the following day to investigate the incident on board the ferry.
He pleaded guilty to not complying with the conditions of his firearms licence by not storing a rifle and several rounds of ammunition in a secure place. A motion by the Crown to have the firearm forfeited was granted by the sheriff.
