Emergency services / Old ammunition trawled up by fisherman to be destroyed

A CONTROLLED explosion is due to take place to destroy ten pieces of historic ammunition which were trawled up by a local fisherman.

Royal Navy bomb disposal experts arrived in Shetland this morning (Wednesday) to carry out the explosion.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Royal Navy bomb disposal experts from HM Naval Base Clyde’s Northern Diving Group (NDG) travelled to Shetland last night after Police Scotland requested their assistance following the discovery of ten historic 30MM shells which were trawled up by a local fisherman.

“The items will be made safe today through controlled explosion.”
