AN investigation is under way after a small electrical fire in a non-public area of Sumburgh airport on Sunday afternoon led to the temporary evacuation of the building.

AN investigation is under way after a small electrical fire in a non-public area of Sumburgh airport on Sunday afternoon led to the temporary evacuation of the building.

Operator Highlands and Islands Airports Limited said the fire was quickly dealt with by a member of staff using a fire extinguisher. The emergency services were not involved in the incident.

Passengers in the waiting lounge had to be rescreened before being able to made their scheduled flight.

In a statement HIAL said: “The building was made safe, operations returned to normal and passengers were able to continue with their journeys. An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.”
