News / Needles at the ready as Wool Week returns
SHETLAND is looking ahead to its ninth Wool Week, which kicks off on Saturday.
The increasingly popular festival will celebrate all things textile over nine days as it plays host to locals and visitors alike, with over 600 people expected to travel to Shetland.
Workshops will take place featuring talent from the USA, Canada, Germany and Finland, while a host of talks, events, demonstrations and tours will also be held.
The event, run by Shetland Amenity Trust, features over 300 events in total which cover everything from hand knitting and Fair Isle design to felting, weaving and spinning.
The Shetland Wool Week ‘hub’ will return to Da Gadderie at the museum in Lerwick to allow people to take a breather and socialise, as well as knit.
The fourth Wool Week annual will also be launched on Saturday, as will merchandise.
On Sunday night at the Anderson High School there will also be a Wool Week opening event, where this year’s patron Elizabeth Johnston will provide a warm welcome.
Project manager Victoria Tait said: “It’s encouraging that interest for Shetland Wool Week continues to grow and we’re looking forward to welcoming some new and familiar faces.
“Promotion for SWW is year-round and it’s a fantastic platform to help put Shetland’s textile industry on the international stage, as well as support and promote its people, skills and crofting heritage.”
A programme of Wool Week events can be found online.
