News / Rowdy party pair fined

TWO young Lerwick men were fined £600 each after admitting their part in a rowdy party which ended in a struggle with police officers.

Scott Rae, 25, of Excelsior Place and 23-year-old Leighton Black of Robertson Lane, pleaded guilty to the offences during birthday celebrations at Rae’s house on 7th January.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that police were called to an excessively noisy party after the men had been out at the pub and returned to Rae’s at closing time.

Officers found it difficult attracting the occupants’ attention and Black refused to open a remote controlled gate for them, but instead argued about the law.

Once the officers got into the flat things “deteriorated into a very alarming situation” and the two police found themselves in a hostile crowd and were obstructed from using the door entry system to let in reinforcements.

It was only after two more police eventually got in that the arrests were made.

Defence agent Gregor Kelly suggested that challenging the law seemed to be a thing with young people full of drink in Shetland and that his clients were perhaps carrying the can for the behaviour of others at the party.

Black pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, behaving aggressively towards police and obstructing them, while Rae admitted by letter resisting, obstructing and hindering police and struggling with them.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank said that it was yet another example of young men full of alcohol banging on about their rights, but failing to acknowledge duties or responsibilities, including that of co-operating with the police.
