News / Engineering jobs to go at Sumburgh helicopter base

HELICOPTER operator Bristow is set to cut some of its engineering jobs at its Sumburgh base.

A total of 12 redundancies are planned between its Shetland and Aberdeen bases as the company – which operates flights to the North Sea for the oil industry – cuts back.

It has been reported that Bristow has lost contracts with BP for work west of Shetland, as well as with Dana Petroleum.

However, a spokesman for the company said that the Sumburgh base remains “strategically important”.

He said: “Bristow Helicopters Ltd can confirm that it has announced proposals involving redundancies of 12 engineers between its Aberdeen and Shetland bases.

“The company is in consultation with the trade union and employees with regard to these proposals.

“Bristow is doing all it can to support affected employees during this difficult time.

“Sumburgh remains a strategically important location for Bristow, and we will continue to maintain operational facilities there.”
